NPK
If you’ve ever picked up any kind of fertiliser or plant feed you will have seen the lettering NPK somewhere on the packaging, so what does this mean and how do we understand which feed is best suited to our requirements?
Let’s take a look and I will explain what it’s all about and what you need to know to make sure you pick the best product that is right for your needs.
N- Nitrogen
P- Phosphate
K-Potassium
So, a plant needs an array of nutrients to keep them in good health and to grow strongly and produce flowers or fruit. These are the main nutrients a plant requires also known as the Marco nutrients.
So how do these Macro nutrients effect a plant’s needs?
Nitrogen - this promotes plant growth, and encourages healthy green and new foliage.
Phosphate - This nutrient is essential for promoting healthy root growth.
Potassium - This encourages plants to produce an abundance of flowers and fruit.
You will notice that alongside the letters are numbers for example 7.7.7, this relates to the percentage of the nutrient with in the fertiliser. So, the bigger the number the bigger the percentage of that nutrient in the product.
Looking to encourage strong healthy growth such as in a lawn then look for a fertiliser high in Nitrogen.
When planting a tree or shrub use a fertiliser high in phosphate as this will encourage the plant to establish a strong and healthy root system.
Adding a fertiliser high in potassium with aid in getting higher yields of fruit and flowers such as applying to tomatoes to get a large crop of fruit.
A fertiliser of equal parts is perfect for use as a general fertiliser to give plants an overall boost at any time during the growing season.
