The Potting shed

  • Hoeing, if you haven’t already you need to be hoeing beds and boarders regularly, removing young weeds with the hoe saves a lot of time and effort.

  • Start staking tall growing perennials such as lupins and delphiniums tying them in from an early stage is easier than tying them in when fully grown.

  • Now plants are in full growth, a feed of a general fertiliser will benefit them greatly.

  • Keep on with sowing vegetable seeds now that the ground has well and truly warmed up.
  • Protect potatoes from any late frosts which will damage the young shoots.

  • Watch out for gooseberry sawfly caterpillar which can defoliate a bush within a couple of days.

  • Containers should now be planted up with summer bedding.

  • Plant up greenhouse tomatoes and cucumbers into larger containers or growbags.

  • Ensure your greenhouse is well ventilated and shaded for all summer.

  • Be aware of any young birds that may get caught or trapped around the garden.

  • Check pond water levels making sure frogs and newts are able to access and leave the pond safely.

The summer seems to be setting in already with the weather in East Anglia staying dry and warm with so little rain around. We had a long hot dry summer last year and this year is looking similar, hopefully we will receive some rain soon but keep an eye on all your plants as they will soon be in desperate need for some water.
